By Mr. Death (He Drinks Your Milkshake)
This actually wasn’t the first movie that I wanted to see this week. I wanted to see Be Kind Rewind, which looked much funnier. But It wasn’t playing at my movie theater and the newspaper gave it 3 and a half stars out of 4, so I decided to give it a shot. Big mistake. Because this movie was not fun to watch. Not really terrible, just dissapointing to see how far Will Ferrell has fallen from Saturday Night Live and Anchorman.
The Story: Jackie Moon (Will Ferrell) is the owner, promoter, coach, and star player of the Flint Michigan Tropics of the American Basketball Association (ABA). In 1976 before the ABA collapses, the National Basketball Association (NBA) plans to merge with the best teams of the ABA at the end of the season. Only the top four teams will make the move and the worst teams will fold. The Tropics are the worst team in the league and if they want to make it to the NBA, Jackie Moon must rally his team and start winning. The only problem with that scenario is the fact that Jackie Moon is not really the coach and star basketball player he thinks he is. He was able to buy the Tropics franchise with proceeds that he had earned from his hit song Love Me Sexy. To keep his team from oblivion and leave his mark in the city, Jackie Moon must inspire his team to win fourth place in the playoffs. Jackie trades a washing machine to another team for a former NBA benchwarmer, Monix (Woody Harrelson) to reach his goal. (Taken from IMDB)
Now, as I said before, this movie isn’t THAT terrible. Some scenes (like the bear wrestling scene) made me laugh. But it was just…blah. It seemed like the movie was rushed and half-assed (which, in all fairness, it probably was). Will Ferrell is very funny, but this is just the same character we’ve seen in every one of his movies since Anchorman (except Stranger Than Fiction). Come on, look at all the characters you played on SNL! You can do a lot of characters, not just the oblivious but good hearted jerk on some sort of sports team.
The whole time I was watching this movie, I felt like something was missing, something that made all the other Will Ferrell movies so enjoyable. And then it hit me like a freight train, funny supporting characters! Everyone else in this movie is so bland you can not care about them at all. And they are all really unfunny. They just sort of stood there and set up Jackie’s jokes. It’s one thing to have a strait man, but at least have some of the other leads be funny, especially when the movie is a comedy.
So should you go check this one out? Survey says…maybe. I guess if you are going with a bunch of friends you could check it out, but I would strongly ask you to reconsider. This isn’t the Will Ferrell you know and love.

Furry Corner: Interview with Alesia Glidewell

by Rune the Ferret
(He doesn’t use these cool parenthesis.)
An interview with Alesia Glidewell, V.A. for Krystal (Star Fox Assault) and Model for Chell (Portal).

How does it feel to have a community of people adore your characters?

Surprising. I had no idea when I got hired that the game or character were so popular. The gig was not only fun to do and exciting in and of itself, but it’s awesome that it’s such a cool and popular game.

What was it like doing VA for Star Fox Assault?

Since it was one of the first video game voice-overs I ever did, I was pretty nervous but everyone was very nice and overall it was a lot of fun and went fairly quickly. Also, I really enjoyed being able to watch some of the animations as I went along since that’s not usually the case.

How’d you get into the business of Voice Acting?

I had a taste of the VO biz in Miami when I was twelve but hadn’t really thought about it as something I could ever realistically make a living at. I moved to Seattle in 2001 and started doing a bit of commercial acting as a side job which led me to voice over. After a couple of animation voice over classes I was hooked and decided to make a go for it.

Have you played of the Starfox Games before your role?

Nope. Around the time the first Starfox was popular I wasn’t really into playing video games much except maybe a little Zelda and House of the Dead at the arcades.

What do you do to prepare for your character voices?

If I’m able to get the script ahead of time and have a good idea of what the client is looking for I just practice at home and sing a few songs in my car to warm up my voice. But, usually, I don’t get the script ahead of time and don’t know too much about the exact vibe the client wants from the character until I get to the studio the day of the session.

With all the face modeling, Do you think essentially you were the main character in Portal?

Valve hired me specifically for the Chell character so I got to spend a day in an orange jumpsuit with people taking photographs and measurements. So I guess it’s pretty much me but with cooler shoes and a rockin’ Portal gun.

Do you think the newer Star Fox games (Like Assault or Adventure) are as good as the original or Star Fox 64?

Don’t know, I haven’t played the original.

Do you feel you lived up or surpassed the previous Krystal’s voice actor?

I’ve never really listened to the previous voice actor’s version of Krystal but have read that many critics strongly prefer one of us or the other. It’s all perspective I guess.

Do you have any favourite games yourself?

Resident Evil has always been one of my favorites. I just finished the Umbrella Chronicles on the wii and had a blast. Baldur’s Gate, D&D Heroes, and Champions of Norrath are also among my favorites.

“How do you work on developing your voice, for the roles you play?”

I watch a lot of cartoons, take a lot of workshops and practice in my car.

How does it feel to work in the Video Game business?

I absolutely love it. I definitely prefer the freelance lifestyle to a 9 – 5 job. I’m still doing other freelance work to make ends meet but, hopefully, I’ll get more video game work in the near future.

Did you ever expect to or wanted to go into this kind of business?

In my wildest dreams. And I really mean that. I just hope that I’m able to keep doing it and some day be exceptionally good at it.

Change The World With “Videogames”

By Alpha 87655320875
(yes I know, 2 updates side by side)

Vodpod videos no longer available.

This is a story that was just too hard to pass up. Lets give a big FU to websters and start spelling Video Games as one word (videogames). Why protest over trivial things like unfair taxes, unclear wars, and horrid medical systems, when we can finally protest for something that will change the world in the long run.

2 Mediocre Ps3 Bundles Announced For Europe

By Alpha 87655320875
(Video Game Companies Hate Europe)
Well you’d think that Sony would also plan on releasing a Metal Gear Solid IV bundle in Europe as well, but so far there have been no reports. As far as new European ps3 bundles go, well……… looks like you Europeans are getting the shaft again. There have been 2 mediocre “meh -_-” type bundles announced. The 1st one is a 40gb playstation 3 with a six axis controller bundled with Gran Turismo 5, and the other is also a 40 gb ps3 with a six axis controller but bundled 3 bluray movies (Spider man 3, 300, and casino royale). They will both run for €399 when released on March 19th.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – Teaser

Indy 4 Cast

Well no more than two weeks ago we were blessed with our first look into the new adventure of Indiana Jones. A whopping 18 years after his last adventure, fears were running wild that perhaps Indy was, God forbid, to old to crack the whip anymore. Minutes after watching this teaser…my fears, at least, were put to rest.

Does this mean the teaser was effective? Yes, to a point. Let’s observe:

Well, lets break this one down…

The Hook: Whether its to remind our aging minds or to educate the new masses, we are given a short summary of Indy’s last three adventures. You gotta love that music and editing. From “…protecting the power of the divine” to “sav[ing] the cradle of civilization” and finally “triumphing over the armies of evil,” we are bought up to speed to what Indy is up to now: getting slammed up against a car and man handled by soldiers. Hmmmm. Pretty effective way to set this up. Show us his heroic past endeavors only to reveal that Indy is still getting himself into trouble. Just the kind of set up we needed for another adventure.

The Build: Man, for a teaser, this one is just chock full of action and great one-liners. From smashing up cars and swinging from the rooftops like Pitfall Harry (or perhaps Pitfall Harry was swinging like Indy?), we are delivered from one action filled moment to the next. I even thought the distribution of comedic moments was fairly well done. Obviously the favorite being after Indy falls short of the car he’s chasing via whip only to crash back into the truck following. “I thought that was shorter.” And smack, right back into the action.

The Close: The music really helps with this one. We are treated to many different action scenes that give fair amount of showcase to new franchise characters played by Cate Blanchett and Shia LaBouf. All of this delivers us to Shia’s character questioning Indy’s being a teacher to which Indiana smirkly replies, “Part time.” This was all an effective close because it gave up absolutely no plot whatsoever but at the same moment intrigued us further. That’s a pretty solid close in my opinion.

My only complaint with this one was the odd slo-mo moment in the beginning when Indy picks up his hat. I just don’t understand this. Were they trying to time it with the music? If so, why not just start the music sooner?

Either way, I’d give this one a solid: A

And as a special treat, here’s a fan made trailer I found. Obviously made before the official title was announced but fairly made and edited.
