UTK: Pokemon Platinum

6 months after the release in Japan, Gamefreak and Nintendo gratefully bring you Pokemon Platinum, a spinoff of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Pokemon Platinum takes place in the same region as Diamond and Pearl, heck it is the same game but with some minor, yet effective changes. Pokemon Platinum came out on on March 22nd.

Storyline

The storyline is pretty much the same as Diamond and Pearl. Team Galatic is trying to conquer the Sinnoh region by acquiring the three legendaries of the lakes, Azelf, Mesprit and Unxie.  Your role is to mind your own business until you bump into Team Galatic’s Headmaster, Cyrus.

You goal now now is to stop Team Galatic and save all of Sinnoh. You are aided again by your pals Proff. Rowan, Dawn, and your rival. A member of the international police is aiding you now on your quest.  Officer Booker will aid you when you least expect it.

Pokemon, the Animals

Seventy pokemon have mirgrated from the other regions, to bring your pokedex count to about two-hundred twenty. This makes it easier to complete the national pokedex, but makes it a pain to complete the Sinnoh ‘dex.  New forms of Girintia, Rotom, and Shaymin have been added. Unfortunately if you do not live inside the United States of America you can not access the Shaymin and Rotom forms. For you to receive the new Shaymin form you have to have the true\movie Shaymin. You can access the forms of Rotom, which are very odd, if you have a game manipulation device.

World

The world has had very little change to it. Instead of the traditional battle tower there is a now a battle frontier, which includes the battle tower. The frontier has various game modes that you can play by yourself, or with a friend. There is a villa in the resort area that is yours! You can furnish it, but for a hefty price. A wi-fi plaza has been added in the basement in every pokecentre. It’s a place to play simple games and blow off steam. The GTS has been expanded to include a section for trainer videos, that can be recorded during online play.  If you missed battling gym leaders, hey, you finally can again. In the survival zone there is a place where only gym leaders, and special guests, can battle again.  However, they are much stronger.

Now the distortion world is not very special. It is an update, that is why I included it. But after you fight Headmaster Cyrus, and find Giritina’s hold item, it is pretty pointless to go back. So don’t go buy the game just to see this boring world.  They made it 3D, so what?

Final Thoughts

I enjoyed Platinum, even after Diamond. It was a great refresher with small, but effective, changes. It made me want to play the story again. It was completely worth the money I paid for it. But they could have spent that time making a new Pokemon game.
