SUPER HAPPY FUN MOVIE TIME #9: Iron Man

By Mr.Death (C-C-Combo Breaker)

I have to say I have been pretty excited for Iron Man. The trailers have been steller, the cast is top notch, and it seemed that with every new piece of media for this film, it looked better and better. But of course we all know that doesn’t mean everything. The Fantastic Four 2 trailer looked good also, but it sucked balls. So does this movie live up to the hype? Yes, yes, and another yes.

The plot is that billionaire Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), owner of the multi-million weapons company Stark Industries, visits Afghanistan to exhibit his newest missile, The Jericho. But he is soon kidnapped by terrorists that demand he builds a Jericho missile for them. With the help of Yinsen (Shaun Toub) he builds a suit that allows him to escape from them, unfortunatly with Yinsen having to pay the ultimate price. When he gets back, he announces that he is shutting down the weapons part of the company to focus on new reserch, much to the dismay of Stark Industries co-owner Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges). With the help of Jim Rhodes (Terrance Howard) and Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), he perfects his suit on his mission to help rid the world of the evil he bestowed on it.

This movie has a surprisingly little amount of action. Honestly, it had just about as much (perhaps a little less) then Ang Lee’s terrible version of The Hulk. The difference between these two is that when the action comes in Iron Man, it delivers. The moments in between the action make it so much more satisfying. But the other parts don’t drag along either. On the contrary, they were fantastic! Fantastic Four tried to do the lighthearted superhero movie, but Iron Man found an equilibrium between comedy (it had a few good laughs) and being dark enough to be realistic. Well, at least as realistic you can be with a movie about a man who dresses up in an mechanical suit.

The cast is terrific. Seriously, there isn’t a single person in this movie that I thought was miscast or out of place. Robert Downey Jr. was perfect as Tony Stark. Let’s be honest, this movie is more about Tony Stark then it is about Iron Man. Downey Jr. is the perfect likable asshole, which is exactly Tony Stark’s character. I can’t think of another person who could have gotten this role down so perfectly. Gwyneth Paltrow does something amazing, she is love interest who isn’t annoying at all! She wasn’t Kristen Dunst who I got mad at every time she came on during Spiderman 3, she played the role well. Terrence Howard makes a great performance out of anything he’s in, and this is no exception. And Jeff Bridges is wonderful as the villain. Also, the CGI is flawless. Greatly done, with some of the stuff looking like it is real. Oscar shoe in for Best Visual Effects in my opinion.

Iron man is great. Really great. Literally, it raised the bar for the rest of the summer blockbusters that are coming out. Hell, it could give The Dark Knight a run for it’s money. Right now, Iron Man ranks #3 on my list of good superhero movies, right after Spiderman 2 and Batman Begins. A must see for this summer, go see it quickly. Run, don’t walk. It’s good. Also, if your a comic fan, make sure to stay after the credits.

I swear man, I so wanted to steal this from you and write my own review the moment I stepped out of the theater, but you captured everything I thought and did a much better job articulating it than I could have.

This movie was amazing and I would go so far to say I think it was better than Spider-Man 2 (as much as I loved that movie) and would tie with Batman Begins for #1. Why because as I was telling my g/f after the movie, in recent memory there have only been two movies that have made me grin from ear to ear like a little kid: Batman Begins and now this one. Seriously, could you imagine what this movie would have been like if the role had gone to Tom Cruise. I have nightmares of what that would have been like.

Also, it has already been announced that Iron Man 2 is scheduled for the first weekend of May 2010 (mark your calendars!) All I have to say is that if everyone returns, this sequel could easily surpass Spider-Man 2 and X-2 as one of the best super hero sequels ever (course, Dark Knight isn’t out yet, so that may change).

ALSO, hopefully you stuck around until after the credits, Mr. Death. If you didn’t…holy shit, you missed one of the best cameo appearances ever which eludes to events that will soon to come…..seriously, I was screaming like a school girl at the end.

Yes Beeslo, I did stay after the credits and I had a similar reaction. I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t seen it yet, but it is a must see for anyone who follows Marvel Comics.

Also, on Iron Man 2, I wonder who the villain will be?

I AM IRON MAN! Awesome review, I prefered this movie to all 3 Spider-Mans, I’ll even be getting the game of it (which seems to be doing pretty well for a movie game). So expect a survival guide for that too! :P
