Tron: Deadly Discs

Oh man, now here’s a blast from my past. This game was amazing for the time and had an almost limitless replay value. Tron: Deadly Discs for the Intellivision was one of the reasons I became a gamer. For those of you that can’t remember or sadly for those that are not familiar with this game’s source material, Deadly Discs is a game based off the 1982 cult classic, Tron. While a commercial and critical flop at the time, this movie was one of the first to implement CG imagery and has since become quite an underground hit. Here’s a vid to refresh your memory or to bring you up to speed…

Yep, that’s right. That was Mr. Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski in the starring role. And no, his name is not Tron…that’s the name of the superhero-like program he meets within the computer. And its Tron that you play in Deadly Discs.

Deadly Discs

The gameplay is incredibly simple but the mechanics take time to master. Basically you are Tron and you must battle against other programs in an arena using, yep…your disc. Like the boomerang in the Legend of Zelda, the discs will find its way back to you after you throw it at an enemy. The disc can also be used to block enemy discs that are thrown at you. At the same time, enemy programs will emerge from gateways that appear on the arena floor. While battling programs, you must also make sure these gateways remain open. However once you are able to keep enough gateways open, the ominous Recognizer program will appear and attempt to trap you and seal the gateways. If you are able to evade capture, you can destroy the Recognizer with a well placed strike at the base of its head. This feat is about as easy to accomplish as landing on the aircraft carrier in Top Gun on the NES.

This one will be hard to find but you might be able to find it somewhere online…I highly recommend you try it out.

I’m sure you and I have reminisced about this one before, B. Hella good game for a hella good (and double-plus-hella underappreciated) console. Ranks up there with Intellivision’s “Advanced Dungeons & Dragons” / “Cloudy Mountain Adventure” as one of the greats that really showed off what the console’s control scheme was capable of.
