Rusty’s Movie Reviews - Army of Darkness

By: Rusty (I Can Has Cheezburger?)

For the past two weeks I have been taking you on a journey through The Evil Dead series. Army of Darkness will be our last stop. Unlike The Evil Dead, and The Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness has moved away from the horror. Army of Darkness is more action/comedy with a pinch of horror. But it still kicks ass.
Once again, Bruce Campbell returns as Ash. In this film, Ash has become alot more cynical. Campbell plays the line of badass/asshole and he does a brilliant job of it. Ash has a ton of great one-liners in this film, and it would be difficult to do them justice. In the first two Evil Deads, Ash is more cowardly, however by Army of Darkness his much braver (and arrogant). We also see Raimi’s camera work in this film again. We see the Demon first person chase, as well as an arrow being follow to its target.
At the end of Evil Dead II, Ash is sucked into a time vortex with his Oldsmobile. Upon being discovered, he is thought to be one of Duke Henry’s men. Duke Henry is at war with Arthur, and Ash is captured because of this confusion. Ash is thrown into a pit when he arrives at Arthur’s castle. He regains his weapons (the chainsaw and boomstick) and fights off the deadite. He uses his boomstick (shotgun) to frighten the village people into getting him back to his time.
The only way to do this is by stopping the deadites. Ash must travel through a forest (while being chased by a demon),deal with an evil version of himself, and fight several mini-Ashs’ (which is one of my favorite scenes). When Ash reaches the Book of the Dead, he attempts to say the magic phrase, but realizes he forgot the end of it. Ash tries to trick the book by mumbling the missing word, but that re-releases the Evil Dead. Thus, the Army of Darkness is unleashed.
Army of Darkness, had a much higher budget than than the first two Evil Dead films. The budget was 11 million, and the film made slightly more than that in theatres. It has a cult following for good reasons. This movie kicks ass. I can’t describe it any other way. GO BUY THIS MOVIE. It is in my top ten. The one liners are great, and the stop-motion battle at the end shouldn’t be missed.

I still haven’t seen the Evil Dead series, but I really want to check them out. Groovy.
This is a good movie for some people who aren’t so much into the horro aspect of the series but would rather just have a plain ole’ good time.
